Rose and Villa combine for 26 points for Falcons in MASCAC setback
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team was in action this afternoon, dropping a 64-51 decision to the Trailblazers of MCLA in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Amsler Campus Center Gymnasium.
Fitchburg State was paced by freshman Kyra Rose with a team-best 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while senior Shabeli Villa added 11 points, three caroms, one assist and one steal.
For MCLA, senior Kayla Hotaling registered a double-double of 26 points and 14 boards as well as one block and one steal, while classmate Brayleigh Hanlon chipped in with ten points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Fitchburg State opened the contest with trey by Villa before MCLA went on a 7-0 run as sophomore Courtney Pingelski drained a three-pointer, while Hanlon added the other four points for the Trailblazers (7-3).
Following a three ball by newcomer Allysa Rivera to cut the lead to 8-6, MCLA proceeded to go on an 8-2 stretch with Hotaling and Hanlon connecting on buckets, while sophomore Mckenzie Robinson knocked down a trey for the 15-8 edge after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Green and Gold cut the lead to four (22-18) after a three-pointer from Rivera before Rose connected a pair of free throws to make the 27-20 going into the intermission.
After the break, Fitchburg State continued to battle as freshman Catherine Coppinger drained a three ball to make the score 31-28. MCLA answered back with a 7-3 run (38-31) on a jumper from junior Emily Moulton and trey by senior Ashley Clawson before the Trailblazer took a 44-33 lead into the final frame after a free throw from sophomore Samantha Gawron.
In the final quarter, the Falcons cut the deficit to 61-49 following a jumper by Villa and a layup from Rose, but MCLA sealed the win as Hotaling drained a pair from the charity stripe, resulting in the 64-51 final.
Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State shot 16-for-60 (26.7&) from the field and 25.8% (8-of-31) from three point range, while MCLA finished 19-of-69 (27.5%) overall and 31.8% (7-for-22) from downtown.
Fitchburg State (9-13, 1-9 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Salem State to take on the Vikings at 7:30 p.m. MCLA (8-14, 3-8 MASCAC) will visit Southern Vermont College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
