Falcons Hold Off Blazers, 86-77

Marazzi and McTomney lead Falcons to non-conference victory

Chicopee, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team defeated the Blazers of Elms College, 86-77 in non-conference action at the Picknelly Arena this evening.

How It Happened

The Falcons were paced by sophomore guard Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) with a team-leading 18 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals, while freshman Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) chipped in with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Senior Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) finished the evening with a near double-double of 14 points and eight caroms to go along with three blocks and one steal.

For the Blazers, senior guard Mackenzie LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) registered a game-best 22 points, three boards and five steals, while junior Niah Pantry (New Haven, Conn.) added a double-double of 17 points and 18 boards as well as three steals and four blocks. Sophomore Molly Moulton (North Adams, Mass.) was also solid for Elms, posting 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steals.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 29-for-74 (39.2%) from the field and 30.8% (8-of-26) from three point range.

Elms finished 30-for-85 (29.5%) overall, but was limited to just (1-of-9) 11.1% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons held a slim 56-55 advantage on the glass, while also holding an 18-15 margin in second chance points.

13th meeting between two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 7-6 all-time when taking on the Blazers.

Two teams had spilt the previous six meetings with Fitchburg State coming away with a 90-47 victory in the last meeting with Elms (1/18/2000).

Falcons will travel to UMass Boston on Thursday to take on the Beacons for a contest starting at 1 P.M. Blazers will host the Hawks of Becker College on the same day for a 1 P.M. tipoff.
