Falcons Upended By Trailblazers, 82-53

Marazzi and Mitchell combine for 28 points in MASCAC setback 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team dropped an 82-53 decision to the Trailblazers of MCLA in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring on a bucket from junior Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) before MCLA went on a 10-2 run capped by a jumper from sophomore Erika Ryan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) (10-4).

The Falcons responded as freshman Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) converted an and one, while Malboeuf added a jumper, but the Trailblazers answered back when junior Mckenzie Robinson (Adams, Mass.) drained a trey at the buzzer for the 20-19 edge.

In the second frame, MCLA upped it margin (44-19) on a jumper by senior Emily Moulton (North Adams, Mass.) before the Falcons closed the first half scoring on a pair of free-throws from sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) and a three ball by sophomore Emma Thomson (York, Maine) to make the score 46-29 going into the break.

Following the intermission, Thomson connected another three-pointer (48-32), but MCLA went on an 8-0 run to end the third quarter as junior Samantha Gawron (South Hadley, Mass.) hit a trio of buckets, while Moulton added one jumper as well for the 67-42 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Trailblazers extended it margin (79-45) after a pair of free-throws from Pingelski, before the Falcons cut into the deficit as freshman Brianna Leone (Uncasville, Conn.) buried back-to-back trey's, resulting in the 82-53 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 20-of-62 (32.3%) from the field and 32.1% (9-for-28) from three point range.

MCLA went 34-of-71 (47.9%) overall, including (6-for-18) 33.3% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were led by Marazzi with a team-leading 16 points and three rebounds, while Mitchell added 12 points and three boards.

For the Trailblazers, Pingelski finished with a double-double of 24 points and ten boards, while Gawron chipped in with 19 points and three caroms.

MCLA controlled the glass with a slim 42-39 advantage, while the Falcons held a 9-6 advantage in second chance points.

68th meeting between the two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 40-28 all-time when taking on the Trailblazers.

MCLA has won the last five matchups with Fitchburg State, including a 64-51 decision in the meeting (2/11/17) at the Amsler Campus Center Gymnasium.
