Falcons Defeated By Lancers, 74-63

Mitchell and Marazzi combine for 41 points in MASCAC setback

Worcester, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team dropped 74-63 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at the John P. Brissette Competition Court.

How It Happened

Worcester State opened the contest on an 8-0 run as junior guard Kate Surprenant (Pelham, N.H.) connected on a pair of jumpers before the Falcons cut the deficit to 12-9 on a trio of three-pointers from freshman Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.).

The Lancers extended its margin (21-14) on a layup from sophomore Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.), but the Falcons answered back as Mitchell converted an inbound pass from junior Hannah Keohan (Lunenburg, Mass.) for a layup underneath to make the score 21-16.

In the second frame, the Green and Gold knotted the score at 23-23 after a trey by Mitchell and a layup from sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.). Worcester State regained the lead, going on an 11-0 stretch with freshman Sam Maglione (Lancaster, Mass.) registering all 11 points for the hosts, en-route to taking a 39-27 advantage into the break.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State battled back (45-40) as newcomer Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) and Marazzi hit jumpers, while freshman Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.)  buried a trey. Worcester State upped its lead (57-45) late in the stanza on a jumper by junior Emily Carens (Northboro, Mass.) before the Falcons responded with a jumper from junior Kerry Brodbeck (Boston, Mass.).

In the final quarter of play, the Lancers extended its lead (69-55) on layup from Sweeney, but the Falcons answered back with jumpers by senior Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) and Keohan. Worcester State secured the win however as Surprenant hit one of two free-throws, resulting in the 74-63 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 25-of-63 (39.7%) from the field and 43.8% (7-for-16) from three point range.

Worcester State went 31-of-65 (47.7%) overall, including (6-for-17) 35.3% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were led by Marazzi with a team-leading 21 points and two rebounds, while Mitchell added 20 points and three boards.

For the Lancers, Maglione finished with a game-best 26 points and two boards, while Sweeney chipped in with a double-double of 16 points and 14 caroms.

Worcester State controlled the glass with a 46-30 margin on the boards, while Fitchburg State converted 22 Lancer turnovers into 15 points on the offensive end.

67th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood with the Falcons 20-47 all-time when taking on the Lancers.

Worcester State has won the last six matchups against Fitchburg State, including a 68-52 decision (2/8/17) at the Parkinson Gymnasium.
