Falcons Edged By Rams, 88-78

Marazzi nets team best 31 points in MASCAC setback 

Framingham, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team dropped an 88-78 decision to the Rams of Framinghams State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Center.

How It Happened

Framingham State took an early 11-2 margin as sophomore guard Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) knocked down a trio of three pointers. Fitchburg State cut the lead to 15-12 on back to back treys from sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.).

The Rams upped its lead (24-12) on a layup by senior Raegan Mulherin (Baldwinville, Mass.), before the Falcons answered with a three ball and two free-throws from junior Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) to make the score 24-18.

With the score 37-20, the Green and Gold went on a 6-0 run on buckets from Marazzi and junior Kerry Brodbeck (Boston, Mass.), but the Rams took a 44-33 advantage into the break as sophomore Julia Sanborn (Dracut, Mass.) sank one of two from the charity stripe.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit as newcomer Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) and senior Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) hit layups (46-37). Framingham State responded with a basket from O'Day for the 66-58 edge.

In the final quarter of play, the Falcons continued to battle with Marazzi and Malboeuf connecting on jumpers (73-64), but the Rams were able to secure the win as O'Day connected on a jumper, resulting in the 88-78 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 28-of-67 (41.8%) from the field and 25.8% (8-for-31) from three point range.

Framingham State went 33-of-64 (51.6%) overall, including (9-for-29) 31.0% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were led by Marazzi with a team-leading 31 points and four rebounds, while Malboeuf added 19 points and eight caroms.

For the Rams, O'Day finished with a game-best 39 points and six boards, while Mulherin chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Fitchburg State controlled the glass with a 42-34 margin on the boards, while also finishing with a 27-9 advantage in bench points.

68th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood with the Falcons 31-37 all-time when taking on the Rams.

Framingham State has won the last ten matchups against Fitchburg State, including an 88-49 decision earlier this season (1/6/18) at the Parkinson Gymnasium.
