Marazzi nets team-best 13 points in MASCAC quarterfinal round setback 

Bridgewater, Mass. – The sixth seeded Fitchburg State Falcons dropped a 67-47 decision to the third seeded Bears of Bridgewater State University in quarterfinal round action of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's basketball tournament at the Tinsley Center.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened an early 10-4 advantage on back-to-back three pointers from freshman Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Thomson (York, Maine), while junior Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) added a jumper. Bridgewater State answered back to take, going a 24-2 run to end the first quarter with junior Olivia DelGrosso (Ledyard, Conn.) leading the way with six points, while senior Chanelle Melton (Brockton, Mass.) added four points for the hosts for the 26-12 margin.

In the second quarter, the Green and Gold cut the lead to 28-14 on buckets from Malboeuf and sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) before the Bear extended their advantage (56-29) going into half on a free-throw by sjunior Kailyn Aguiar (Acushnet, Mass.).

Following the break, Bridgewater State upped its lead (46-22) after a jumper by junior Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) before the Fitchburg State responded as senior Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) and Marazzi connected on buckets to cut the lead to 51-27.

In the fourth frame, the Falcons continued to battle as Marazzi netted five straight points to start the frame (56-34), but the Bears answered back on layups from Aguir and freshman Destiny Fitzgerald (Medford, Mass.), resulting in the 67-47 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 15-of-57 (26.3%) from the field and 17.4% (4-for-23) from three point range.

Bridgewater State went 27-of-69 (39.1%) overall, including (3-for-19) 15.8% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were paced by Marazzi with a team-leading 13 points and three rebounds, while Malboeuf added seven points and four boards for the Green and Gold.

For the Bears, Melton finished with a game-best 14 points and six caroms, while senior Jennifer Whyte (Braintree, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.

Bridgewater state finished with a slim 46-44 margin on the glass, while Fitchburg State collected nine second chance points as well as 19 points off the bench.

66th meeting between the two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 15-51 all-time when taking on the Bears.

Bridgewater State has won eight of the last ten meeting against Fitchburg State. With the Falcons coming away with a 62-59 victory last week at the Parkinson Gymnasium.
