Falcons Drop Home Opener to Curry, 67-63

Marazzi, Coppinger both post double-doubles

Fitchburg, Mass.– The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team fell to the Colonels of Curry College, 67-63 in non-conference action this evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg raced out to an early 8-0 lead on six points from junior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) and a pair of free throws from senior Catherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.). Curry closed out the first quarter with a 10-6 run as junior Sam Bamford (Easton, Mass.) and freshman Peyton Perine (Fairfax, Va.) connected for three points each.

After the Falcons extended the first half lead to 18-12, the Colonels went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-20 advantage culminating with a Zuquila Mbachiantim (Stratford, Conn.) layup with 4:11 to play. Junior Emma Thomson (York, Maine.) connected on a baseline jumper and Marazzi added three points late to give the Green and Gold a 26-24 cushion heading into the break

Following intermission, the Falcons took a 34-24 margin to start the quarter on a pair of treys from Marazzi sandwiched around a good jumper from sophomore Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.). The visitors chipped away at the deficit and took a 41-40 lead with a layup from freshman Amanda Leal (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and held a 45-43 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Falcons re-gained (49-47) the lead when sophomore Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) drained a three-pointer, however the Colonels responded with a Leal jumper to knot the game (49-49) with 6:20 to play. Trailing 57-50 with 4:46 to play the Falcons answered with seven points from Coppinger to make it a two-point game (60-58). Curry finished the game with a 7-5 run resulting in the 67-63 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 19-for-79 (24.1%) from the field and 17.1% (7-for-41) from three point range.

Curry went 26-of-75 (34.7%) overall, including (5-of-12) 41.7% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were led by Marazzi with a game-best 25 points and ten rebounds, while Coppinger added a double-double of 14 points and 14 boards.

For the colonels, Perine posted a team-leading 22 points and sixteen caroms, while Leal chipped in with 16 points, and seven rebounds for the visitors.
