Owls Fly Past Falcons in MASCAC action, 89-61

Fitchburg, Mass.– The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team dropped an 89-61     decision to the Owls of Westfield State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Wednesday evening at Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State University received two early baskets from junior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) and senior Kerry Brodbeck (Boston, Mass.) for a 5-4 score. Westfield put together a 14-5 run to take control of the first quarter. Junior Emma Thomson (York, Maine) strung together six straight points for the Falcons cutting the deficit to 19-15. Westfield outscored the Falcons down the stretch receiving baskets from freshman Isabella Aitken (Pittsfield, Mass.), sophomore Taina Slaughter (Springfield, Mass.) and senior Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) to close out the first quarter maintaining a 26-16 lead.

Fitchburg State junior Emily Beauvais (Haverhill, Mass.) poured in six points for the Falcons in the second stanza as Westfield extended the lead to 46-24 at intermission.

Following halftime, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit to 53-33 on a downtown three-pointer from Thomson, before Westfield answered back with five points from senior Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass.) to end the third quarter (72-43).  

In the final quarter of play, the Green and Gold outscored the Owls 18-17, sophomore Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) paced the Falcons with nine points in the frame, but it wasn't enough as the visitors cruised to the 89-61 final.

Inside the Numbers

• Fitchburg State shot 26-of-74 (35.1%) from the field and 24.1% (7-for-29) from three point range.
• Westfield State went 35-of-106 (33%) overall, including (10-for-46) 21.7% from beyond the arc.
• The Green and Gold were led by Marazzi with a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Thomson chipped in eleven points, while Coppinger had 10 points and 17 caroms for another double-double.
• For the Owls, Barrett finished with a game-best 27 points, while McCarthy added 18 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Falcons will conclude the regular season on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Bridgewater State to take on the Bears at 3:00pm. The Owls will host the Lancers of Worcester State in MASCAC action on the same day with a 2:00 pm tipoff.
