Falcons Upend Bulldogs, 79-67

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team defeated the Bulldogs of Dean College, 79-67 this evening in non-conference action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 8-2 margin as senior Emma Thomson (York, Maine) drained back-to-back treys, while classmate Catherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.) added a layup. The Falcons upped their margin to 18-10 with a pair of layup from senior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.), but Dean would cut the lead to 18-16 with senior Taisha Alexandre (Quincy, Mass.) hitting a three-pointer.

2nd quarter

The Green and Gold extended their advantage (29-18) on buckets from sophomore Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) and freshman Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.), while Thomson and Marazzi added one three ball each.

Fitchburg State pushed its lead to 38-28 as Marazzi drilled another three-pointer before sophomore Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.) sank a pair from the charity stripe, but junior Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) would hit a buzzer beating jumper for the host for the 40-30 edge going into the break.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Dean chipped the deficit to 40-32 on a Rudder layup before Fitchburg State answered back with a Thomson trey (46-34). The Bulldogs responded with a Potter layup (53-44), but the Falcons pushed the lead up to 58-46 as Coppinger connected on a layup.

 4th quarter

The two teams traded baskets to start the frame as Potter hit a pair of layups for the Bulldogs, while McDonald and Thomson notched the buckets for the Falcons. Dean would battle back with sophomore Sitaara Muhammad (Cambridge, Mass.) netting the jumper, but Fitchburg State would secure the victory when Marazzi buried a three-ball, resulting in the 79-67 final.

  • Falcons were led by Marazzi with a career tying best 30 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals
  • Coppinger and McDonald combined for 14 points each, while Thomson added 13 points for Fitchburg State
  • For the Bulldogs, Rudder finished with a game-best 30 points, 14 boards, two assist and one steal
  • Potter chipped in with 21 points, 15 caroms and one block for Dean College
