Falcons Fly Past AMCATS, Notch First Win of the Season

 

 

Milton, Mass.  – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team earned a 69-52 victory over Anna Maria College in the consolation game of the Curry College Tip-Off on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

1st Quarter

The Falcons came out hot, shooting 61.1% from the floor in the first frame. Senior Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) had four points and freshman Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) tossed in eight points to give the Falcons a 12-2 just four minutes in. AMCATS Franchesca Hammond connected on a three pointer to cut the deficit to 19-7 but the Green and Gold finished with a lay in from junior Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.) to lead 26-15 after one.

2nd Quarter

Fitchburg State upped their advantage (35-19) going on a 9-4 run, capped by back-to-back buckets from freshman Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.) and McDonald. The Falcons would take a 38-24 margin into the locker room as Genness netted a pair from the charity stripe with 16 seconds left in the stanza.

3rd Quarter

Following intermission, Fitchburg State upped its lead (42-24) opening with layups from McDonald and Harold. Sophomore Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) and Genness each poured in a trey midway through the third to extend the lead (51-29). Anna Maria countered with five points from Taliyah Bailey, however Almeida hit from downtown to end the quarter.

4th Quarter

Anna Maria opened the fourth on a 14-4 with Brianna Rogers tallying 8 points in the run. The Falcons settled back down with hoops from Harold and McDonald to secure the first victory of the season for Fitchburg State.

 

Inside the Numbers

  • Harold paced the Falcons with a double-double, 12 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and a steal, Genness finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.  
  • For the AMCACTS, Marinique Reddin  led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds
  • Anna Maria shot 19-of-64 (29.7%) from the field and (3-for-20) 15% from three point range
  • Fitchburg State finished 70-for-65 (41.5%) overall and (7-for23) 30.4% for beyond the arc
  • Fitchburg held a 53-33 advantage on the boards
