Falcons Drop 87-51 Decision To Lasers

Newton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Women's Basketball team dropped an 87-51 decision to the Lasers of Lasell University this evening in non-conference action from the Lasell Athletic Center.

 The Basics

How It Happened

1st quarter

Lasell raced out to a quick 12-1 advantage, capped by a layup from senior Meg Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) before Fitchburg State answered with a pair of free throws by senior Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) to make the score 12-3

The Lasers upped its lead to 34-7 as seniors Marie Zampano (North Bradford, Conn.) and Brooke Damboise (Bolton, Conn.) connected on three-pointers. The Falcons responded with Harold converting a layup and free-throw to cut the lead to 34-10.

2nd quarter

Lasell pushed its margin to 38-12 when newcomer Juju Nealy (Fitchburg, Mass.) notched a bucket, but Fitchburg State would reduce the deficit to 38-18 on baskets by freshman Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.) and classmate Ephemian Bailey (Maple Grove, Minn.).

The Green and Gold trimmed the lead to 46-35 on a three ball by Harlow and jumpers from Bailey and freshman Delaney Brown (Billerica, Mass.) before the Lasers took a 50-27 lead into the break on a Carroll layup.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Lasell upped the lead to 72-27 as newcomer Jasmine DePina (Providence, R.I) and junior Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) registered layups before Bailey hit back-to-back layups for Fitchburg State to cut the lead to 72-31.

The Falcons continued to battle with sophomore Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) and Harlow netting baskets to make the score 74-36 going into the final quarter of play.

 4th quarter

The Falcons cut the lead to 82-42 on layups by Harold and Harlow, but the Lasers answered back with a Shakira Henriquez (Lawrence, Mass.) basket for the 84-42 advantage. The visitors responded on a pair of layups from Harlow and a three-pointer by Brown before Lasell secured the victory when freshman Sara Beauchamp (South Hadley, Mass.) registered a jumper, resulting in the 87-51 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Bailey with a career best 17 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block
  • Harlow chipped in with 13 points, eight caroms, three assist and one steal
  • For the Lasers, Zampano finished with a game-best 18 points, three boards, two assists and one steal
  • Nealy added 16 points, one rebound, two assists and three steals
  • Tenth meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 8-2 all-time when taking on the Lasers
  • Fitchburg State shot 18--for-65 (27.7%) from the field and (2-of-20) 10.0% from downtown
  • Lasell went 34-of-77 (44.2%) overall and (12-for-28) 42.9% for beyond the arc
  • Both teams finished with 47 boards
