Falcons Topped By Spartans, 78-41

Castleton, Vt. – The Fitchburg State University Women's Basketball team suffered a 78-41 setback to the Spartans of Castleton University this evening in non-conference action from the Glenbrook Gymnasium.

 The Basics

How It Happened

1st quarter

Castleton grabbed a 5-2 edge to open the contest on a jumper from junior Gwyn Tatton (Rehoboth, Mass.) and a three ball by freshman Ryleigh Couloutti (Castleton, Vt.) before Fitchburg State cut the lead to 6-5 on a layup from freshman Ephemian Bailey (Maple Grove, Minn.)

Newcomer Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) connected on a pair from the charity stripe for the Falcons to make the score 17-8, but the Spartans would extend their lead to 26-8 on back to back buckets by junior Elise Magro (Rutland, Vt.) for the 26-8 edge.

2nd quarter

The two teams traded baskets to start the second quarter with senior Lauren Pratt (Cumberland, R.I.) connecting for Castleton, while freshman Caileen Hurley (Whitman, Mass.) notched the layup from Fitchburg State (28-10).

The Green and Gold trimmed the deficit to 35-15 with newcomer Delaney Brown (Billerica, Mass.) notching a jumper and classmate Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.) draining a three pointer before the Spartans took a 41-15 advantage into the break on a Tatton layup.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State went on a 9-2 run with Bailey posting a pair of baskets, while senior Lovashia Rosario (Worcester, Mass.) added a three pointer to make the score 41-22. Castleton answered with a Magro layup though to push the lead to 43-22.

The Falcons continued to battle with Bailey connecting on a jumper and senior Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) sinking two from the free-throw line to cut the lead to 60-29 going into the final quarter of play.

 4th quarter

The Spartans upped their lead to 71-35 with Coloutti and Magro registering buckets before the Falcons responded as sophomore Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) connected on a three ball (73-39). Castleton secured the victory however when freshman Liz Bailey (West Rutland, Vt.) notched a bucket, resulting in the 78-41 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Bailey with a team-best ten points and six rebounds
  • Harlow chipped in with seven points, six caroms, two assists and two steals
  • For the Spartans, Coloutii finished with a game-leading 19 points, three boards, two assists and two steals
  • Magro added 16 points, one rebound, four assists and five steals
  • Second meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 1-1 all-time when taking on the Spartans
  • Fitchburg State shot 14--for-53 (26.4%) from the field and (4-of-23) 17.4% from downtown
  • Castleton went 33-of-81 (40.7%) overall and (6-for-21) 28.6% for beyond the arc
  • Spartans held a 51-40 edge on the glass
