Falcons Upended By Lancers, 78-43

Worcester, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Women's Basketball team dropped a 78-43 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Brissette Court.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Fitchburg State grabbed an early 4-0 advantage on a free throw from senior Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) and a three-ball by freshman Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) before Worcester State took the lead 6-4 as junior Elizabeth Gallela (Tewksbury, Mass.) netted a pair of buckets.

The Lancers went on a 12-0 run to extend its margin to 16-6, capped by a jumper from newcomer Abby St. Martin (Putnam, Conn.). Fitchburg State trimmed the deficit to 18-12 with junior Gina Parmenter (Oxford, Mass.) draining a three ball.

2nd quarter

Worcester State pushed its lead to 32-12 as Gallela connected on a layup, but the Falcons answered when Genness knocked down a three pointer to make the score 32-15.. Fitchburg State continued to battle as freshman Pena Niles (Billerica, Mass.) hit a three pointer as well (36-18).

The Lancers would push the lead to 42-18 on a pair of free-throws from freshman Shelby Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) before the newcomer Delaney Brown (Billerica, Mass.) hit one of two from the charity stripe to cut the lead to 40-16 going into the break.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State opened the frame with a three ball and a jumper from senior Lovashia Rosario (Worcester, Mass.) (44-21), Worcester State responded with a Emma Found (Wakefield, Mass.) basket though.

The Green and Gold answered back with Parmenter and Genness notching buckets (56-28), but the Lancers closed out the third quarter on a 6-0 run following a Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) layup for the 60-28 edge.

 4th quarter

Fitchburg State reduced the lead to 63-34 when sophomore Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) and freshman Stephanie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) connected on back-to-back three balls before Worcester State secured the victory on a Lemay layup, resulting in the 78-43 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Parmenter with a team-best eight points, six rebounds, one assist and four steals.
  • Genness chipped in with seven points, one carom and three assists
  • For the Lancers, St. Martin finished with a game-leading 15 points, six boards, one assist and two blocks
  • LeMay added 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • 74th meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 21-53 all-time when taking on the Lancers
  • Fitchburg State shot 14--for-54 (25.9%) from the field and (8-of-23) 34.8% from downtown
