Falcons Fall To Lancers On Senior Day

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Women's Basketball team dropped an 83-47 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Parkinson Gymnasium on senior day.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Worcester State grabbed a 7-1 edge to open the first quarter as junior Elizbeth Galleala (Tewksbury, Mass.) sank a free-throw before the Falcons trimmed the deficit to 9-8 with a Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) jumper.

The Lancers responded with a 11-2 run, capped by a Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.) layup, but the Falcons answered with a Harold layup off a feed from freshman Delaney Brown (Billerica, Mass.) to make it 22-10

2nd quarter

The Green and Gold opened the second frame with buckets from newcomer Sariah Dyer (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Harold (24-14), but the Lancers answered with a 6-0 run when Gallella hit a layup for the 30-14 lead.

Worcester State upped it margin to 36-18 on a Nyah Thomas (Attleboro, Mass.) basket before Fitchburg State closed out the half with free-throw from freshman Pena Niles (Billerica, Mass.) and classmate Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.) to make the score 36-23 going into the break.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, freshman Ephemian Bailey (Maple Grove, Minn.) hit a layup to cut the lead to 36-25, but Worcester State proceeded to go on a 17-0 run, polished off by a Gallella jumper. The Falcons answered back with a Brown layup to reduce the lead to 59-28 before the Lancers pushed the lead to 67-33 as senior Emma Poplawski (Rowe, Mass.) connected on a jumper.

4th quarter

The Falcons continued to battle with Brown hitting a layup, while sophomore Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) sank a pair from the charity stripe (67-37). The Lancers extended its advantage (75-40) with a Chloe LaPierre (Plainfield, Conn.) bucket before Brown notched three straight points to cut the lead to 80-46.

Worcester State secured the victory however as LaPierre netted a jumper, resulting In the 83-47 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Harold with a team-best 14 points, eight caroms, one steal and one block
  • Bailey chipped in with eight points and four boards
  • For the Lancers, senior Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) finished with game-best 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
  • Hurynowicz added 11 points, four boards and one steal
  • 75th meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 21-54 all-time when taking on the Lancers
  • Fitchburg State shot 16-for-82 (30.8%) from the field and (3-of-18) 16.7% from downtown
  • Worcester State went 34-of-77 (44.2%) overall and (3-for-16) 18.8% for beyond the arc
  • Lancers held a 47-38 edge on the glass
  • Prior to contest Fitchburg State honored seniors Jadelen Harold and Lovashia Rosario for their contributions to the program
