Falcons Upended by Bears in MASAC Play



Fitchburg, Mass. - The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team fell to the Bears of Bridgewater State, 97-53 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Bridgewater State raced out to a 7-2 margin on five points from Hanna Dziadyk (Wakefield, Mass.) but the Falcons followed with a pair of layups from Rylie Harlow (Hanson, Mass.) and senior Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) to make it a 7-6 ballgame. Four-points from Destiny Fitzgerald (Medford, Mass.) and Caroline Tripp (Plymouth, Mass.) pushed the Bears' advantage to 16-7. The Falcons cut the deficit to 23-12 with a three-point jump shot from freshman Allison Prentis (Mansfield, Mass.) however the Bears closed out the first frame with a 7-0 run to lead 33-12.

2nd quarter

Green and Gold sophomore Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) drained a trey with six minutes to play to chip into the Bears lead (44-18). The Bears finished the first half with ten straight points from Hannah Moniz (Taunton, Mass.) to extend their advantage (63-24).

3rd quarter

Trailing 69-25 early in the frame, the Falcons put together a 9-5 run capped by layups from Pena Niles (Billerica, Mass.) and Sariah Dyer (Raynham, Mass.). Bridgewater upped its lead (77-4) on a bucket from Sophia Gaucher (Lakeville, Mass.) to end the quarter

4th quarter

Freshman Jannise Avelino (Peabody, Mass.) drained five straight scores for the Bears for the 90-48 lead, but the Falcons counter as freshman Stephanie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) and Almeida had late scores resulting in the 97-53 final. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Harold with a team-best 15 points and 6 rebounds
  • Prentis added 12 points and three rebounds for the Green and Gold
  • For the Bears, Avelino led all scorers with 23 points and 7 rebounds, Gaucher finished with 15 points
  • Fitchburg State shot 19-for-53 (35.8%) from the field and (7-for-17) 41.2% from three-point range
  • Bridgewater State finished 40-of-75 (53.3%) overall and (5-for-18) 27.8% for beyond the arc
  • Bears held a 42-35 margin on the glass
