Women's Basketball Stumbles to Wildcats

PROVIDENCE, RI: Fitchburg State women's basketball fell to Johnson & Wales this evening in non-conference action.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 12/12/23

- Score: JWU 70, Fitchburg 69

- Records: JWU (4-6), Fitchburg (3-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  After a tight first quarter, the Falcons were able to close the gap and take a one-point lead into the break after they outscored the Wildcats 16-9 in the second quarter. Fitchburg would build onto their lead throughout the second half, reaching as high as 15 points, achieved with just 6:34 left in the fourth.

- The last five minutes of the fourth saw the Falcons stall offensively, and JWU worked their way back, eventually tying the game at 67-67 with 1:22 left in the quarter. Twenty-seven seconds later, Autumn Ford would hit the go-ahead jumper to give the Wildcats their first lead since the first quarter. Rylie Harlow (Hanson, MA) would tie the game back up with 15 seconds left on a layup. After a Falcon foul, Sarah Wisniewski would go 1-for-2 at the line to give the hosting team the 70-69 victory.

- Wisniewski would go on to have a game-high 24 points, with five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Alexa Lora also had a good shooting day, finishing with 18 points. Mikayla Caruso outrebounded everyone in this one, as she pulled down 19 rebounds.

- Harlow was the leading scorer for the Falcons with 22 points. Stephanie Hart (Shirley, MA) continues to play well both in scoring and rebounding. She finished with another double-double, consisting of 16 points and 15 rebounds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  JWU shot 32.9% (25-76) from the floor, 26.1% (6-23) from behind the 3-PT line, and 77.8% (14-18) from the free throw line.

-  Fitchburg shot 31.2% (24-77) from the floor, 22.2% (6-27) from three, and 71.4% (15-21) from the free throw line.

-  Fitchburg outrebounded the Wildcats 64-to-48.

- Fitchburg State women's basketball will be back in 2024 on the 3rd of January. They will start conference action against MCLA at 5:00 PM in North Adams.
