Swan registers a game-high nine point in Falcons fifth win of the season

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 18, 2009) - Junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) registered a game-high nine points as Fitchburg State defeated Becker College, 19-13 in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance action this afternoon.

nine points in the Falcons win.

Swan paced the Falcons attack, recording four goals and five assists, while aiding the Fitchburg State defense with three groundballs and two draw controls. Classmate Tori D'Amato (Hampden, Mass./Merrimack) was also solid with three scores and one helper, while freshman Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) chipped in with three markers.

Sophomore Tammy Mullen (Pottstown, Penn./Pottstown) led the Becker attack, totaling a team-high seven points and game-best seven goals, while freshman Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock) added five points on four goals and one assist. Junior Renee Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) chipped in with one score.

It was a very tight contest throughout the first half, with each team trading goals midway through the frame, but Becker College registered consecutive goals at the 17:59 mark to grab a 6-4 lead. Fitchburg State rallied back over the final 15 minutes of the half, outscoring the Hawks 7-3 to take an 11-9 advantage at the break. Swan led the Falcons with three goals and three assists in the half, while Mullen registered five goals for Becker.

            In the second half, Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front, outscoring Becker 8-4 in the frame with a 24-7 advantage in shots. After two quick scores by the Hawks, Fitchburg State rallied off six consecutive goals to earn its fifth victory of the season. Freshman Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) led the Falcons with two goals in the half, while Swan posted one goal and two assists.

Fitchburg State controlled the offensive tempo with a 42-21 advantage in shots, while collecting 11 groundballs. Sophomore Connie Perry (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) collected three saves in net for the Falcons, while sophomore Alena Phongsa (Putnam, Conn./Putnam) stopped 13 shots for the Hawks.

Fitchburg State (5-7, 2-3 NEWLA) will be in action again on Tuesday as it travels to Bridgewater State College at 4 p.m. Becker College (7-8, 2-3 NEWLA) will travel to Pine Manor College on Monday at 4 p.m.
