Swan collects team-high six points in Falcons overtime setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 28, 2009) - Junior Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) registered two overtime goals to lead Worcester State to a 16-14 victory over Fitchburg State in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance action this afternoon.

Jamieson led all scorers, posting a game-high seven points with six goals and one assist, while senior Shannon Feeley (W. Springfield, Mass./W. Springfield) added four points with three scores and one helper. Junior Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) was also strong, chipping in with two markers.

Junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) led the Fitchburg State offense with a team-high six points on three goals and three assists, while freshman Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) added to her team-leading goals count with five scores in the match. Junior Tori D'Amato (Hampden, Mass./Merrimack) aided the Falcons attack with three goals and one helper, while rookie Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) rounded out Fitchburg State's top four with three assists and one marker.

Fitchburg State opened the contest with three consecutive goals by D'Amato and Burns, but Worcester State rallied back, posting an 8-3 run over final 22 minutes of the half to take an 8-6 lead at the break. Jamieson led the Lancers with three goals in the half, while Burns and D'Amato tallied five scores combined for the Falcons.

In the second half, both teams battled with Fitchburg State outscoring Worcester, 7-5 to force extra frames. Swan led the Fitchburg State comeback with two goals in the period, including the game-tying score with 1:30 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Colleen Manning (Plainville, Mass./King Phillip) paced the Lancers with two goals in the half, while Jamieson continued her hot shooting with one score late in the game.

In overtime, both teams continued to mirror each other as Burns and Feeley traded goals, but Jamieson connected for two unanswered goals late in the first overtime to secure the Lancer victory. Jamieson put the Lancers on top 15-14 with 1:13 remaining in the frame before giving Worcester a two goal cushion with her 11th tally of the season just 0:38 later.  

Fitchburg State held a slim 33-32 advantage in shots, while Worcester State grabbed a 39-37 lead in groundballs. Senior Jen Astrella (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) registered ten saves in net for the Falcons, while freshman net minder Haley Erickson (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) turned away 13 shots for the Lancers.

Fitchburg State (1-4, 0-1 NEWLA) will hit the field again on Tuesday as it hosts Castleton State at 4 p.m. Worcester State (3-0, 2-0 NEWLA) will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
