Fitchburg State Upends New England College, 13-8

White posts seven points in Falcons third victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 7, 2014) –The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team was in action this evening, defeating the Pilgrims of New England College, 13-8 in non-conference action at Elliot Field.

The Falcons receive a strong offensive output from junior Lindsey White (Hanover, Mass.) who tallied a game-best seven points on five scores and two assists, while freshman Kayla Panek (Belchertown, Mass.) posted four points on two markers and pair of helpers. Senior Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) and newcomer Andrea Comeau (Watertown, Mass.) were also solid adding two goals each for the hosts.

For New England College, senior Jacquelyn Lane (Scituate, Mass.) led the way, totaling four points on three tallies and one assist, while freshman Allison Granata (Norwalk, Conn.) chipped in with three points on a pair of scores and one dish.

Fitchburg State erupted for nine first half goals en-route to its third victory on the season. With the score 3-2, the Falcons went on a 6-1 run to close out the first frame using a pair of tallies from White, while Comeau, Apple, Panek and freshman Ali Laferriere (Tyngsboro, Mass.) collected one tally each during the run to take a 9-3 lead into the break.

In the second half, both teams trade scores throughout the stanza as the Pilgrims cut the lead to 11-5 on back-to-back scores from Granata and sophomore Elizabeth Bois (Westbrook, Maine) at the 16:17 mark before White sealed the victory for the hosts with a pair of scores en-route to the 13-8 final.

New England College held a slim 27-26 advantage in shots and a 14-9 margin in draw controls, while the Falcons registered 30 ground balls including a game-high seven by senior Erin Murphy (Warwick, R.I.). In net, sophomore Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) picked up the win, making 13 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while freshman Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.) suffered the setback, stopping nine shots for the Pilgrims in 60 minutes of work.

With her six draw controls in the contest, Laferriere broke Fitchburg State's single season draw control mark of 61 held by form Falcon standout Carissa Kennedy. Ali currently has 66 draw controls on the season.

Fitchburg State (3-6, 0-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it visits the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. New England College (2-8, 2-0 NAC) will travel to Green Mountain College on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
