Fitchburg State Upended By Western New England, 17-6

Laferriere and Crutchfield net two goals each in non-conference setback

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team concluded its 2016 Florida Spring Trip this evening, dropping a 17-6 decision to the Golden Bears of Western New England University at the National Training Center.

In the opening half, Western New England took the lead on a Brooke Kumnick tally off an assist from Taylor Scialdone for the 1-0 margin. Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) six minutes later as sophomore Corinne DeSimone found the back the net.

The Golden Bears answered with five straight scores form Kumnick, Scialdone and senior Ashley Brunner as well as a pair of goals by sophomore Julia Winer for the 7-2 advantage before sophomore Bailey Miller connected with on her eighth score on the season to make the score 7-5 at the half.

Following the break, the two teams traded marker with Scialdone and Laferriere finding the back of the net to open the second half. Western New England proceeded to score the next nine goals with Scialdone and Winer combining for five the Golden Bears nine goals over the run for the 17-4 lead.

The Falcons closed out the scoring late in the contact as sophomore Lia Crutchfield connecting on back-to-back scores for the Green and Gold, resulting in the 17-6 final.

Fitchburg State was led by Laferriere, who registered two points on two goals scored and a pair of groundballs, while Crutchfield added two points on two markers as well as two groundballs and a pair of draw controls.

For Western New England, Winer posted a game-best eight points on four goals and four helpers to go along with one groundball and a caused turnover, while Scialdone was also solid, totaling eight points on six tallies and two assists as well as four draw controls, one caused turnover and a groundball.

Throughout the match, Western New England held a 37-24 margin in shots as well as a slim 20-19 advantage in groundballs. In between the pipes, senior Liz Darrigo made ten saves in 60 minutes of work for Fitchburg State, while sophomore Shannon McFadden stopped eight shots for the Golden Bears in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-2, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Mount Ida College to take on the Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. Western New England (4-2, 0-0 CCC) will visit Mount Holyoke on Tuesday for a 5 pm start.
