Comeau nets game best five markers for Falcons in non-conference victory
FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State University defeated the Pride of Regis College, 14-3 in non-conference women's lacrosse action this evening at Regis Stadium.
Fitchburg State was paced by junior Andrea Comeau, who posted a game best five points on firve markers, while classmate Ali Laferriere added to the mix with four points on one score and three helpers to go along with one ground ball. Sophomores Jaimee Lutz and Carrie Long were also solid for the Green and Gold, combining for four points on two goals and two assists as well as 11 draw controls, nine ground balls and one caused turnover.
For Regis, senior Sam Salamone led the way, registering three points on three goals score with six ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while sophomore Nicole Roche finished with one point on one assist as well as two ground balls and a draw control.
Fitchburg State and Regis traded goals over the first 17 minutes of play as Salamone notched all three of her scores in the first 12 and half minutes of play for the Pride, while sophomore Bailey Miller, Lutz and Comeau found the back of the net for the Falcons to knot the score at 3-3.
The Falcons broke the 3-3 stalemate with just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening half when junior Kayla Panek received a feed from Laferriere and buried a shot into the back of the net for the 4-3 lead before Laferriere put connected on a tally of her own three minutes later as Fitchburg State took a 5-3 advantage into the break.
Following intermission, Fitchburg State upped its lead on goals from sophomore Corinne DeSimone, Comeau and Long to make the score 8-3 just ten minutes into the second frame. Comeau proceeded to register the next three tallies before freshmen Michelle Hennessey and Nicole Lee notched their first collegiate markers to close out the scoring for the Green and Gold, resulting in the 14-3 final.
Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a commanding 32-13 advantage in shots, while the Pride finished with slim 28-26 margin in groundballs. In goals, senior Liz Darrigo stopped seven shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while counterpart Emma Decker made nine saves for Regis in 60 minutes of work.
Fitchburg State (5-2, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State for a contest starting at 4:30 p.m. Regis (2-3, 0-0 NECC) will visit Eagles of Daniel Webster tomorrow for a 4 p.m. start.
