Fitchburg State Sails Past Salem State, 19-5

Comeau paces Falcons with game-best eight points in MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team registered a 19-5 win over the Vikings of Salem State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at Elliot Field.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a quick 9-0 advantage as juniors Kayla Panek and Andrea Comeau notched three three tallies each, while sophomore Jaimee Lutz, classmate Corinne DeSimone and fellow sophomore Bailey Miller added markers for the Falcons.

Salem State cut into the deficit midway through the first half when sophomore Courtney Smith connected on back-to-back scores (9-2) before the Green and Gold closed out the half with goals from junior Ali Laferriere, Miller and Lutz for the 13-3 margin after one half of play.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State upped its lead with six straight goals as Comeau scored the first three, while Laferriere, sophomore Carrie Long and newcomer Sarah Mallahan followed with one marker each to make the score 19-3.

The Vikings responded with scores from sophomore Erin Riley and senior Amanda Nihan found the back of the net, resulting in the 19-5 final.

Comeau sparked the Falcons offense with a game-best eight points on six goals and two assists as well as one ground ball, two draw controls and one caused turnover, while Laferriere added five points on two markers and three helpers to go along with four ground balls and one draw control.

For Salem State, Smith posted three points on three goals with a ground ball and two caused turnovers, while Nihan and Riley combined for two point on two score as well as five ground balls, two draws controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Throughout the contest, finished with a commanding 38-16 margin in shots, while also holding a 31-23 advantage in ground balls. In net, junior Liz Darrigo turned away eight shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while senior Jenn Toussaint made 16 saves for Salem State in 60 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State (9-4, 2-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Framingham State to take on the Rams at 4:30 p.m. Salem State (5-6, 0-3 MASCAC) will host the Buccaneer of Mass. Maritime Academy on Tuesday for a 6 pm start.
