Fitchburg State Streaks Past Framingham State, 15-6

Laferriere totals eight points for Falcons in MASCAC victory

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team used a 7-0 second half run to take control of the game as they defeated the Framingham State University Rams 15-6 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Maple Street Field.    

With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-4 on the year and are now 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the Rams slip to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Falcons grabbed the early lead with back-to-back goals just over three minutes into the game on tallies by freshman Sarah Mallahan and junior Kayla Panek, but the Rams cut the lead in half on an unassisted goal from Jessica Graham to make the score 2-1.

The Falcons rattled off three straight including a free position shot from sophomore Jaimee Lutz to extend the lead to 5-1. Sophomore Kimmy Foley scored unassisted off a draw for the Rams with just over a minute remaining, but the Green and Gold answered right back with a goal from junior Ali Laferriere to take a 6-2 lead into the locker room.

Following the break, the Rams cut into the lead on a tally by Foley with just over 19 minutes remaining the second half, but the Falcons erupted for a 7-0 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the game on a trio of scores from Panek, while Lutz, Laferriere, sophomore Carrie Long and newcomer Michelle Hennessey added one goal each for Fitchburg State during the stretch, en-route to the 15-6 final. 

Laferriere paced the Falcons offense, totaling a game-best eight points on four markers and four assists as well as one draw control, while Panek finished with four points on four goals to go along with one draw control and a ground ball. Long was also solid for Fitchburg State, registering one point on one score, while adding four ground balls, eight draw controls and five caused turnovers.

For Framingham State, Jessica Graham led the way, posting three points on a pair of goals and one helper, while Foley added to mix with two points on two markers to go along with four ground balls, five draw controls and one caused turnover.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 32-16 advantage in shots, while also holding a 19-14 edge in ground balls. In goal, senior Liz Darrigo stopped six shots in 60 minutes of action for the Falcons, while Indigo Fox Tree-McGrath made nine saves for Framingham State in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Lancers of Worcester State University for a contest starting 1 p.m. Framingham State will travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday at 12 p.m.
