Fitchburg State Surges Past Worcester State, 14-8

Comeau nets 100th career tally for Falcons in MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team used an 8-0 run in the second half as the Falcons defeated Worcester State, 14-8 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at Elliot Field.

In the first half, the two teams traded scores to open the contest as junior Corinne DeSimone found the back of the net for the Falcons, while sophomore Alexis Vecchiarelli scored for the Lancers to make the score 1-1. 

Worcester State took the lead with a pair of markers from senior Jackie Connors before junior Ali Laferriere and sophomore Carrie Long struck for the Green and Gold to retie the contest at 3-3. With the score 7-4, the Falcons registered two of the final three goals of the half with Laferriere and Long finding the back of the net for the Green and Gold as the Lancers took an 8-6 lead into the break.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State regained the lead for good, going on an 8-0 run over the course of the second half. Junior Andrea Comeau struck for three of the Falcons eight tallies, while Laferriere added a pair of markers during the streak, resulting in the 14-8 final

Laferriere sparked the Falcons offense, totaling five points on four goals and one helper as well as three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover, while Comeau posted three points on two scores and one assist to eclipse the 100 goal milestone. Long was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing with two goals, five draw controls, 11 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. With thos eight caused turnovers, Long set a new single season Falcon record with her 36th caused turnover on the season.

For Worcester State, Connors registered three points on two markers and one assist with one ground ball and three draw controls, while Vecciarelli notched three points on a pair of goals and one helper as well as one ground ball.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a commanding 33-15 margin in shots, while also holding a 35-26 advantage in ground balls. In between the pipes, senior Liz Darrigo stopped six shots in 60 minutes of action for the Falcons, while junior Kristy Pessa made 14 saves for Worcester State in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (11-4, 4-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Monday at it travels to Massachusetts Maritime Academy to take on the Buccaneers at 7 p.m. Worcester State (7-8, 3-2 MASCAC) will host Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
