Fitchburg State Upends Mass. Maritime, 13-6

Laferriere collects five points for Falcons in MASCAC triumph

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Ali Laferriere netted four goals and an assist for five points to lead Fitchburg State to a 13-6 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Falcons (12-4, 5-1 MASCAC) scored the first three goals of the match and built a 5-1 advantage just 4:24 into the contest, and after the host Buccaneers (4-9, 1-5 MASCAC) closed back to within three on senior Molly Smith's marker, a pair of goals off the stick of junior Kayla Panek extended Fitchburg State's lead to 7-2 with 9:25 to play in the half. 

 Massachusetts Maritime collected the final two goals of the opening 30 minutes of play to trail 7-4 at the break, and after the teams traded two tallies each in the first 8:23 after intermission, the Falcons iced their triumph by netting the final four goals of the contest including two by Laferriere, while freshman Lindsey Luksha capped the scoring for the Green and Gold, who improve to a perfect 8-0 on the road this season.

Panek finished with a hat trick in the win for Fitchburg State, which also received a pair of goals and an assist from junior Andrea Comeau as well as a marker and helper from senior Brianna Dunn. Sophomores Jaimee Lutz and Carrie Long along with Luksha also tallied on the night for the Falcons, who received helpers off the sticks of sophomores Corinne DeSimone and Bailey Miller.

Smith netted a pair of goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of tallies and two assists from sophomore Stephanie Hunt. Junior Ashley Solari notched a marker and helper as well for the Buccaneers, who received a goal from senior Shavonne Boyle and an assist from junior Dahlia Seggelin.

Senior Liz Darrigo picked up her 12th win of the season in goal with a seven-save effort for Fitchburg State, while sophomore Mikayla Correia made 18 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Falcons outshot the Buccaneers by a 38-19 margin (31-13 on goal) for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State hosts MCLA in a MASCAC match on Wednesday evening in Fitchburg, Mass. that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
