Fitchburg State Streaks Past Colby-Sawyer, 13-4

Comeau nets game-best seven points for Falcons in non-conference win over Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team defeated the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College, 13-4 in non-conference action this afternoon at the Veitch Turf Field. With the win, Fitchburg State extends it winning streak to three game, while the loss snaps a four game winning streak for the Chargers.

The Falcons were led by a seven-point effort from senior Andrea Comeau, recording game highs of five goals and two assists. Classmate Ali Laferriere added four goals and five draw controls, while junior Carrie Long had an impressive ten ground balls and ten caused turnovers. Long entered today's game ranked second in the nation with 4.3 caused turnovers per game.

Colby-Sawyer junior Nicole Lavigne led the Chargers with three goals and four caused turnovers. She now has 121 career goals, ranking ninth all-time in program history. Junior Carli Chiodo had the other Colby-Sawyer goal, while sophomore Sierra Schuster collected a game best six draw controls.

Comeau opened the game with her first tally 1:11 into the contest before the Falcons added three more goals in the next 10 minutes to take a 4-0 lead before Lavigne got the Chargers on the board with 15:06 left in the half.

Fitchburg State got one back on Comeau's third goal of the half, but was quickly answered by a successful free position from Chiodo to make the score 5-2. The Green and Gold increased their lead, scoring three unanswered goals by Comeau, Laferriere and freshman Tracy Long to close the half with an 8-2 advantage. 

In the second half, Laferriere put the visitors on top by eight (10-2) with a pair of goals in the opening ten minutes of stanza, while Lavigne scored twice more for Colby-Sawyer in the frame, sandwiched around a pair of scores by senior Kayla Panek and a goal from Comeau, resulting in the 13-4 final.

For the contest, Fitchburg State finished with a 28-17 advantage in shots, while also holding a 28-16 margin in ground balls. In goal, sophomore Marguerite Belcher made eight saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while senior Meghan Castellano and freshman Kailyn Lapham combined to stop nine shots for the Chargers with each playing a half. 

Fitchburg State improves to 6-5 and will begin a three-game home stand on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest against Framingham State. Colby-Sawyer has its four-game win streak snapped to drop to 7-3. The Chargers will hit the road this weekend for the first time since March 29^th as they travel to Thomas College on Friday.
