Falcons Soar Past Trailblazers, 16-2

Terrio picks up 100th career coaching victory for Fitchburg State in MASCAC victory

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team defeated the trailblazers of MCLA, 16-2 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State raced out to an early 6-0 lead in the first ten minutes of play on goals from Sarah Napolitano (Peabody, Mass.), Sarah Mallahan (Dracut, Mass.), Nicole Lee (Quincy, Mass.), Anna Gagnon-Burch (Putney, Vt.), Tracy Long (Georgetown, Mass.) and Carrie Long (Foxboro, Mass.), er-route to taking an 8-0 advantage into the locker room.  

Following the intermission, the Falcons extended its margin (15-0) with freshman Alyssa Flynn (Salem, Mass.), classmate Alyssa Anderson (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Amanda Hem (Lowell, Mass.) netted their first collegiate scores before MCLA broke its scoring silence as sophomore Kim Granito (Glenmont, N.Y.) and senior Mackenzie Cutler (East Amherst, Mass.) found the back of the net, resulting in the 16-2 final.

Fourth meeting between the two teams on the lacrosse field with the Falcons currently 4-0 all-time when taking on the Trailblazers.

Fitchburg State has won the last four contests against MCLA, including a 15-4 decision last season at Shewcraft Field. Former Falcon Andrea Comeau led the way for the Green & Gold with four goals and three ground balls.

C. Long paced the Falcons offense, finishing with a game-best six points on three goals and three assists as well as one ground ball, five draw controls and four caused turnovers, while Napolitano added four points on one score and three helpers to go along with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

For the Trailblazers, Cutler registered one goal, one groundball, four draw controls and three caused turnovers, while Granito notched one marker, one groundball, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.

In goal, junior Marguerite Belcher (Quincy, Mas.) stopped two shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while counterpart Zoe Elwell (Guilderland, N.Y.) made 16 saves for MCLA in 60 minutes of work.

With the four caused turnover, C. Long moved into ninth place on the all-time NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse caused turnover list with 203 career caused turnovers, while Fitchburg State head coach Rick Terrio collected his 100th career coaching victory for the Falcons in the win.
