Bridgewater State Upends Fitchburg State, 4-0

Berent collects five saves to lead Falcon defense

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 4, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered a tough 4-0 setback to Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts State Athletic Conference action this afternoon.

Senior captain Megan Williamson (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) led the Bridgewater State scoring attack with two goals in the match, while classmate Julie Sullivan (Whitman, Mass./Whitman Hanson) and junior Kaitlin LaMothe (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip) added one goal and one assist each.

Bridgewater State opened the scoring early as Williamson connected for her first goal of the game just 4:58 into the match off an assist from Sullivan. Fitchburg State pressured midway through the first period as a header by junior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) sailed just high off a Falcons corner-kick. The Bears added two more scores by Sullivan and LaMothe late in the frame to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Fitchburg State came out firing, rifling off three early shots, including headers by Wundt and freshman Lindsay Taylor (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood), but Bridgewater State goaltender Kayla Grover (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) registered two second-half saves to keep the Falcons scoreless. The Bears added a score midway through the second frame on Williamson second goal of the game to secure the victory.

Bridgewater State out-shot Fitchburg State19-7 in the contest with a 12-3 advantage in the first half. Freshman goaltender Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) led the Falcon defense with five saves, while junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) suffered the loss with three stops.

Fitchburg State (7-4, 1-2 MASCAC) is back in action again next Saturday as it hosts Westfield State College at 6 p.m. Bridgewater State (4-1-2, 2-0 MASCAC) will host UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
