Fitchburg State Upends Framingham State, 1-0

Falcons play-off bound with Wundt's 15th goal of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 1, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team posted its sixth consecutive victory as it defeated conference foe Framingham State College, 1-0 in MASCAC action this afternoon at Elliot Field. With the win, the Falcons now have their eyes set on the MASCAC Tournament.

Fitchburg State junior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) registered the lone goal of the match, while sophomore Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) set up the game-winner with an assist.

Both teams played to an even first half which witnessed only one shot on net. Framingham State held a 7-2 advantage in shots but junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and the Fitchburg State defense denied the only Ram shot on goal to keep the game at a 0-0 draw.

In the second half, Fitchburg State came out firing as Wundt connected for her team-leading 15th goal of the season just five minutes into the frame. The Rams came close to tying the match in the 65th minute of the match as sophomore Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) had her shot ricochet off the cross bar and into the hands of the Falcon defenders.

Fitchburg State limited Framingham's scoring opportunities in the second half, holding the Rams to just two shots on net. Offensively, the Falcons created several scoring opportunities late in the second period, as junior Ashley Dutcher (Littleton, Mass/Littleton) blasted two shots on net.

Framingham State held a 15-10 advantage in shots, but Fitchburg State provided constant pressure with a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. In net, Swan registered her third shutout of the season with three save in the complete game effort while senior Kate Simonelli (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) notched four saves for the Rams.

Fitchburg State concludes its regular season play with an overall record of 13-5-0, 4-3-0 in the MASCAC, and now awaits a berth in the MASCAC Tournament. Framingham State finishes the regular season with a 5-10-1 mark, 2-5-0 in the MASCAC.
