Fitchburg State Blanks Mass-Maritime, 8-0

Falcons post second straight shutout for ninth win of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 18, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team posted its second straight 8-0 victory, defeating Mass-Maritime Academy in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Freshmen Lindsay Taylor (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) and Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) led Fitchburg State offensively, registering two goals apiece, while junior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) and freshman Courtney Kimball (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) totaled one score and one helper.

With her three points in the match, Wundt moves into second place on the Fitchburg State all-time scoring list. She has totaled 71 points on her career and she is currently two points shy of tying the all-time mark of 73 held by former athlete Maryann Barrett.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring early in the first half and never looked back as the Falcons collected their ninth victory of the season. Kimball put the Falcons on the board in the 10th minute of the match with an unassisted score, while senior Jen Morse (Shirley, Mass./Littleton) followed just 2:42 later with her first goal this season. Wundt rounded out the first half scoring with her team-leading 11th goal of the year.

In the second half, Fitchburg State totaled 21 total shots en route to five more scores. Taylor and Kennedy led the scoring explosion with two goals apiece, while freshman Hannah Mitchell (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) connected for her first collegiate goal.

Fitchburg State out-shot Mass-Maritime 41-0 with a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) collected her first collegiate victory with her start, while Buccaneer freshman Colleen Fissette (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) notched 23 saves despite the loss.   

Fitchburg State (9-5, 2-3 MASCAC) is back in action again next Saturday as it travels to MCLA at 1 p.m. Mass-Maritime (2-8, 0-5 MASCAC) will host UMass Boston this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
