Fitchburg State Shoots Past Plymouth State, 5-2

Kennedy and Kimball pace Falcons to 11th victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 28, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team posted its fourth consecutive victory, defeating Plymouth State University 5-2 in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Freshman Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) and sophomore Courtney Kimball (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) led the Fitchburg State scoring attack with one goal and one assist apiece, while junior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland), sophomore Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) and junior Jen Tabor (Webster, Mass./Bartlett) added one score apiece.

Freshman Betsy Brooker (Woolwich, Maine/Morse) and junior Gianna Minervini (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) led the Plymouth State offense with one goal apiece, while newcomers Amy Green (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Charlotte Miller (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) chipped in with one assist each.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the match as Wundt connected for her team-leading 14th goal of the season off a dish from Kimball. Kimball followed suit with a goal of her own just eight minutes later as she deposited her fourth score of the season. Fitchburg State took a 3-0 lead into half time as Landry rounded out the first half scoring with her third goal of the year.

Fitchburg State continued its momentum in the second half, striking for its fourth goal of the contest just 10:11 into the frame. Kennedy took an Ashley Dutcher (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) cross-pass from the right side and chipped it in for her eighth score of the season. The Falcons put another point on the board with a Tabor goal, before the Panthers connected for back-to-back scores by Brooker and Minervini to close out the half.

On the cold and rainy night, Fitchburg State out-shot Plymouth State 16-11, with an 8-5  advantage in the first half. Junior Kyla Batchelder (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) got the nod in net for the Falcons, totaling six saves in her complete game effort. Freshman Stephanie Regina (Howell, N.J./Howell) stopped four shots in net for the Panthers

Fitchburg State (11-5, 3-3 MASCAC) is back in action on Thursday as it hosts Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. Plymouth State (5-7-4, 1-4-1 LEC) will travel to UMass Boston on Saturday at 1 p.m.
