Fitchburg State Shuts Out Salem State, 1-0

Swan collected 21st career victory in second shutout of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 22, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Salem State College in Massachusetts State Athletic Conference action this evening at Elliot Field. The win marks only the second victory over the Lady Vikings in Fitchburg State program history.

 Sophomore Mary Lindberg (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) scored the lone goal for Fitchburg State to help the Falcons improve to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in the MASCAC. Lindberg put the Falcons on the board in the 80th minute of the match, as she connected from 30 yards out to give Fitchburg State a 1-0. The goal was Lindberg's first score of here collegiate career.

With the victory, junior goaltender Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) collected her 21st career victory in net for the Falcons, tying her for first all-time with former goalkeepers, Karen Irving and Erin Kenney. This season, the veteran goalkeeper has totaled 22 saves and a .786 save percentage en route to a 6-2 record and two shutouts.

The contest was very evenly played as both teams collected 11 total shots. Salem State held a 6-3 advantage in corner-kicks, but the Fitchburg State defense limited the Lady Vikings scoring opportunities with team defense. Freshman Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) totaled three saves in net for Salem State.

Fitchburg State (7-3, 1-1 MASCAC) is back in action again next Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State College at 11 a.m. Salem State (6-1-1, 1-1-0 MASCAC) will travel to Southern Maine on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
