Westfield States Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 3-2

Wundt breaks program's career goal mark with 30th career goal

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 11, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered a tough 3-2 setback to Westfield State College in Massachusetts State Athletic Conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Junior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) and sophomore Katie Hayward (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) led the Fitchburg State offensive attack with one goal apiece, while sophomore Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) chipped in with an assist.

With her score, Lauren Wundt becomes the program's all-time career goals leader, surpassing the previous mark of 29 held by Maryann Barrett. On her career, Wundt has totaled 30 career goals and six assists for 66 total points. She is currently only seven points shy of the program's all-time points record of 73 also held by Barrett.

The duo of sophomores Kate MacLellan (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) and Kelly Gonet (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) led the Westfield State front as both players contributed to all three Owl goals. MacLellan registered five points on two goals and one assist, while Gonet totaled four points on one goal and two helpers.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring midway through the first half as it exploded for two back-to-back goals by Wundt and Hayward to take a quick 2-0 lead. Westfield State rallied back over the final 20 minutes of the first half to knot the score at 2-2 on two MacLellan goals.           

Westfield State came out firing in the second half, out-shooting Fitchburg State 8-3 in the frame. After 30 minutes of dead-even play, Westfield State broke the scoring silence as Gonet connected for her first goal of the season to give the Owls a 3-2 edge in the 76th minute.

Westfield State out-shot Fitchburg State 14-9, while corner kicks were even at 1-1. Junior goalkeeper Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) stopped seven shots in net for the Falcons, while freshman goalie Jess Pieciak (Three Rivers, Mass./Palmer) notched two saves for the Owls

\Fitchburg State (7-5, 1-3 MASCAC) is back in action again on Wednesday as it travels to Wheelock College at 4 p.m. Westfield State (9-3, 3-0 MASCAC) will travel to Bridgewater State on Monday at 1 p.m.
