Swan tops program's all-time career wins mark with her 22nd victory

BOSTON, Mass. (October 15, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team posted a decisive 8-0 victory over Wheelock College in non-conference this afternoon at Pine Manor College.

Fitchburg State used a balanced offensive attack as eight different players registered goals in the victory. Junior Ashley Dutcher (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) paved the way for the Falcons with three points on one score and one assist, while classmates Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) and Meagan Belanger (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) each registered scores. Freshmen Lindsay Taylor (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) and Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) were also solid in the win with one goal apiece.

With the victory, junior goalkeeper Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) became Fitchburg State's all-time career wins leader with her 22nd career victory, breaking the previous mark of 21 held by Karen Irving (1996-96) and Erin Kenney (2001-04). Over here three-year career, Swan has amassed 118 saves in 2828 minutes of work, en route to eight career shutouts.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring and never looked back as Wundt continued her hot foot with her tenth goal of the season just 1:59 into the match. Dutcher followed just 3:46 with her seventh score of the year off a Courtney Kimball (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) assist.

The Falcons took a 4-0 lead roughly ten minutes later as Belanger and Dowson notched back-to-back goals over a 0:41 span. Belanger ignited the scoring surge with a score of her own corner kick, while Dowson followed with her second score of the season. Taylor broke the match open in the 21st minute with her seventh score of the year, while freshman Erica Graves (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) capped the first half scoring with her first collegiate goal.

Fitchburg State added two more scores in the second half of the contest to complete its 8-0 victory. The Falcons out-shot the Wildcats 30-3 in the contest with a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Swan earned the victory for the with one save for the Falcons while freshman Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./West Hartford) stopped two shots. Sophomore Nicole Zina (Bristol, R.I./Bristol) totaled seven saves for the Wildcats.    

Fitchburg State (8-5, 1-3 MASCAC) is back in action again on Saturday as it hosts Mass-Maritime at 6 p.m. Wheelock College (2-10-1, 1-4-1 NECC) will host Southern Vermont College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
