Castleton State Gets Past Fitchburg State, 1-0

Swan posts third double-digit save performance of the season

CASTLETON, Vt. (September 24, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered its fifth consecutive loss, falling to Castleton State College, 1-0 in non-conference action this evening.

EMILY SWAN

Junior Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, Vt./Miller River Union) scored her sixth goal of the season in the 23rd minute of play to lift Castleton State to its second victory of the year. Sophomore Brynn Campbell (Clarendon, Vt./Mill River Union) played a corner kick short to Chadburn's feet, catching the Falcon defense off guard. Chadburn whistled a shot off the near post, gathered her own rebound and snuck it past Falcon keeper Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) to give the Spartans the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg struggled to gain offensive chances versus the Spartan defense but sophomore Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) was able to get off a pair of first-half shots that sailed just wide. Classmate Brenna Flynn (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) had the lone Falcon shot on goal in the first half, which was turned away by Castleton keeper, Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt./Lamoille Union).

Castleton held a 29-6 advantage in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, continuously applying pressure. Swan had 10 saves to keep Fitchburg State in the game, but the Falcons were unable to create offense mustering only two shots on goal. Davis made three saves, earning her second shutout of the season for Castleton State

Fitchburg State (2-6-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Salem State College at 1 p.m. Castleton State (2-5-1, 1-0-0 NAC) will host Norwich University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
