Curry Edges Fitchburg State In Season Opener, 1-0

Berent registers six saves in 2009 debut

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 2, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team battled Curry College for 92 minutes before falling in a 1-0, non-conference contest this evening. 

After two scoreless frames which witnessed a combined 23 shots throughout, Curry broke the scoring silence as senior captain Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) buried her own rebound after a diving save by Fitchburg State keeper Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard).

Curry controlled the tempo throughout the match, posting a 17-9 advantage in shots and 5-3 advantage in corners. Fitchburg State came alive in the second half, collecting four early shots on net, but sophomore keeper Julia Tinetti (New Haven, Conn./Cheshire Academy) turned in a solid performance between the pipes to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard.

Sophomore Hannah Mitchell (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) kick-started the Falcons second-half attack, blasting two shots on net. Mitchell opened the frame with a one-time shot in the middle of the box and later came within inches of securing a Falcon victory as she rifled an indirect kick that was stonewalled by Tinetti.

Tinetti kept the Colonels anchored all contest, registering four saves in 92 minutes to collect her first shutout of the season. Berent mirrored Tinetti throughout the match, turning in a solid six save, complete game effort for the Falcons.    

Fitchburg State (0-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Salve Regina University on Saturday at 1 p.m. Curry (1-0, 0-0 TCCC) will travel to Emerson College on Saturday as well for a match starting at 12:30 p.m.
