Eastern Connecticut Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 1-0

Swan posts a career-best 12 saves in net for the Falcons

MANSFIELD, Conn. (September 16, 2009) - Senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) registered 12 saves for Fitchburg State, but the Falcons suffered a 1-0 non-conference loss to Eastern Connecticut State University this evening.

Eastern Connecticut State broke a 69 minute silent streak as sophomore Jo-Ann Merheb (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) connected for an unassisted goal in the 70th minute. Merheb tallied her first goal of the season, blasting a groundball inside the far left post of the goal to give the Warriors the one goal edge.

The Warriors controlled the mach offensively, out-shooting the Falcons 23-1 in the contest with a 13-0 advantage in the first half. Eastern Connecticut also tallied 13 corner kicks in the match while the Falcons were denied any attempts.

Senior goalkeeper Kim Church (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) and sophomore netminder Theresa Pagnozzi (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) combined for the Warriors' one save shutout, while Swan collected a career-best, 12 stops for the Falcons.           

Fitchburg State (2-3-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Worcester State College at 10 a.m. Eastern Connecticut State (2-2-1, 0-0-0 LEC) will also be in action on Saturday as it travels to Western Connecticut State University at 6 p.m.
