Fitchburg State Draws With UMass Dartmouth, 1-1

Wundt registers late second half score to lift Falcons to non-conference tie

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 29, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 deadlock with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a non-conference match up this evening.

UMass Dartmouth had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first half as junior forward Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) knocked in the rebound of freshman forward Jamie Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater) in the 39th minute, but Fitchburg State rallied back late in the second half as senior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) fired home a shot in the 73rd minute off an Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) helper.

With both teams deadlocked at 1-1, the game was sent into extra frames. In the extra time, Fitchburg State tested UMass Dartmouth keeper Jen Warren (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Feehan) as Wundt was stopped on two short-range scoring opportunities. Fitchburg State continued to apply pressure as a third shot by Wundt was deflected by Warren with 6:20 remaining.

Both teams registered 16 shots in the contest, but Fitchburg State dominated the overtime periods with a 6-2 advantage in strikes. Warren and junior Tanya Braga (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) combined to make 11 saves for the Corsairs, while senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) made eight for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (2-7-1, 0-2-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State College at 10 a.m. UMass Dartmouth (4-5-1, 1-1-0 LEC) will travel to the University of Southern Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
