Westfield State Rolls Past Fitchburg State, 6-1
Marrone nets lone Falcon goal in conference loss
WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 10, 2009) - Sophomore Katrina Marrone (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) scored Fitchburg State's lone goal as the Falcons fell to Westfield State College, 6-1 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Westfield State freshman Leanne Rivard (Chicopee, Mass./Comprehensive) led all scorers, posting a game-high five points on two goals and one assist, while senior Meg Gearin (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) added two markers. Junior Kate MacLellan (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) and senior Alicia Chandler (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) were also solid with one goal and one assist each, while senior Colleen Kenny (Longmeadow, Mass./Cathedral) and junior Kelly Gonet (Southwick, Mass./Southwick) chipped in with one helper apiece.
Westfield State opened the contest with an early 2-0 lead as MacLellan and Gearin notched back-to-back scores just twenty minutes into the game. Fitchburg State cut the Owl lead to only one as Marrone netted her second goal of the season in the 28th minute, but the Owls rallied off four straight goals in the second half to clinch their ninth consecutive victory.
Rivard sparked the Owls second half scoring surge with a pair of goals in a six minute span, while Chandler and Gearin added one score apiece.
Westfield State controlled the offensive tempo of the game, holding a 26-3 advantage in shots and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks. Senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) tallied nine saves in net for the Falcons, while sophomore Jessica Pieciak (Three Rivers, Mass./Palmer) stopped one shot for the Owls.
Fitchburg State (3-8-1, 1-3-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it travels to Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. Westfield State (11-1-1, 4-0-0 MASCAC ) will visit Worcester State College on Friday at 7 p.m.
