FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 19, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team opened its 2009 MASCAC schedule this afternoon, falling to Worcester State College, 1-0 at Elliot Field.

EMILY SWAN

Worcester State senior Stephanie Demake (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) scored the lone goal of the contest, connecting with junior Sarah Connors (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) for her first score of the season.

The first half of the contest was purely a defensive match-up with neither team finding the back of the net. Worcester State controlled the ball play, holding a 9-6 advantage in shots with six attempts on goal. Fitchburg State collected several opportunities on net, including two corner attempts, but freshman Shannon Zononi (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) and senior Megan Belanger (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) shots were denied.

In the second frame, Worcester State came out gunning, taking a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes of the half. Demake gave the Lancers the early one goal edge, connecting for her first score of the year off teammate Sarah Connors' corner kick. The senior captain took Connors' dish off the ensuing corner and deposited a header in the upper right corner of the goal.

Worcester State controlled the offensive tempo throughout the contest, holding the ball on its half of the field with a commanding 17-7 lead in shots and 7-2 lead in corner attempts. Falcons' senior goalkeeper Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) was strong in between the pipes, turning away 11 shots, while junior keeper Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, Mass./Quabog) posted two saves in the complete game shutout.
