Mansfield and Floeck collect one goal each in Falcons non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Sophomore forward Whitney Mansfield posted her first collegiate tally to help the Fitchburg State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory in non-conference women's soccer action at Elliot Field this evening.

Mansfield nearly got the Falcons on the board in the 19th minute of action as the second-year Falcons settled a pass at midfield and raced down the center of the field, but the breakaway shot went just wide of goal to keep the score at 0-0.

The Green and Gold opened the scoring with just over ten minutes remaining in the stanza as Mansfield collected the ball 40 yards out, went up the near sideline and tucked the ball inside the far post for her first collegiate tally to make the score 1-0 going into the intermission.

Following intermission, Becker College nearly knotted the score at the 37:52 mark as newcomer Ciara McKissick crossed the ball to sophomore midfielder Stephanie Burnell in front of the net, but Burnell's shot sailed wide left.

Fitchburg State doubled its lead (2-0) in the 74th minute of action when junior forward Victoria Floeck collected a rebounded shot off the foot of freshman Hannah Keohan and blasted a shot into the back of the net for her first score on the season.

The Hawks cut the deficit in half three minutes later as Becker College was awarded a penalty shot following a hand ball and sophomore Meghan Bealka fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State out shot Becker 22-11, while also holding a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. In goa junior Morgan Steele posted four saves en-route to earning the victory, while the duo of sophomore Rebecca Carkhuff and freshman Jordyn Martel combined to stop seven shots for the Hawks.
