Fitchburg State Falls At WPI, 5-0

Steele and Gale register three saves each in non-conference setback

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team suffered a tough 5-0 setback to the Engineers of WPI this afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Alumni Stadium on the campus of WPI.

WPI senior Emily Doherty and junior Emma Turton each scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 shutout of Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match at Alumni Stadium,

The Engineers (5-0) have now outscored opponents 27-4 and are now three shy of tying last year's goal total for the season. The Falcons, meanwhile, slip to 2-1 on the young season. 

Senior Emily Doherty and junior Emma Turton each posted a pair of makers for WPI as Doherty's goals in the 8th and 68th minute sandwiched Turton's two markers at 49:06 and 56:12, while junior Erin Bracken capped the Engineers scoring with a tally in the 70th minute of play..

Throughout the contest, WPI held a commanding 19-1 advantage in shots, while also holding a 7-0 margin in corner kicks. In goal, junior Morgan Steele and newcomer Shelby Gale collected three saves each for the Falcons, while junior Abbey Teliska finished with on stop for WPI before giving way to freshman Gabi Hoops for the final 18:59.

Fitchburg State (2-1-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Saints of Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. WPI (5-0-0, 0-0-0 NEWMAC) will travel to city rival Worcester State on Tuesday for a contest starting at 7 p.m.
