Salve Regina Edges Fitchburg State, 2-1 (OT)

Hallett notches first collegiate goal for Falcons in non-conference setback

NEWPORT, R.I. – Freshman forward Nicole Hallett collected her first collegiate score in the 57th minute of play as the Fitchburg State University women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 overtime decision to the Seahawks of Salve Regina University in non-conference action this afternoon at Reynolds Field.

With the score knotted at 1-1, sophomore forward Lea Adams gathered a feed from senior Jessica Broadhurst and deposited the ball into the right side of the net for the game winning goal seven minutes into the overtime period to secure the fifth win on the year for Salve Regina.

In the first half of play, Salve Regina took the early lead just 4:10 into the stanza as freshman Abby McMackin fired a shot into the back of the net for her team-leading eighth marker on the season for the 1-0 advantage.

Fitchburg State nearly knotted the score in the 37th minute of play when junior Sammi Zina and sophomore Whitney Mansfield each put shots on frame, only to have Seahawks goaltender Carly Pala deny both scoring chances to preserve the 1-0 lead going into the break.

Following intermission, the Falcons tied the contest (1-1) at the 56:45 mark as Mansfield blasted a shot on goal that junior midfielder Christine Pala cleared of the goal line before Hallett collected the rebound and deposited the ball inside the near post for her first collegiate tally.

The Seahawks had several quality scoring opportunities to close out regulation, keyed by sophomore Emily Cuellar and McMackin, but Fitchburg State keeper Morgan Steele came away with couple big saves to set the game into overtime.

Throughout the game, Salve Regina held a 25-13 margin in shots, while also holding a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. In between the pipes, Steele set a new career high with 16 saves for the Falcons in the setback, while Pala stopped six shots for Salve Regina in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-7-0, 0-2-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts the Lancers of Worcester State University for a contest starting at 10 a.m. Salve Regina (5-5-0, 1-2-0 TCCC) host Wentworth on Saturday at 3 p.m.
