Steele turns away 11 shots for Falcons in MASCAC setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team was in action this morning, dropping a tough 1-0 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Elliot Field.
In the first half, Worcester State nearly opened the scoring six minutes into the frame as freshman forward Jenna Martin collected a loose ball in front of goal and fired a shot, only to have Falcon keeper Morgan Steele deny the opportunity with a stellar kick save.
Fitchburg State's best scoring chance of the stanza occurred in the 17th minute of play when sophomore forward Whitney Mansfield put a shot on target that Worcester State goaltender Jillian Witkowski turned aside to preserve the 0-0 stalemate going into the break.
Following intermission, the Falcons threatened in the 73rd minute of action as junior forward Victoria Floeck lofted a shot on goal, but Worcester State defender Mackenzie Foye cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
The Lancers finally broke the 0-0 deadlock at the 77:55 mark when senior forward Alicia Macomber settled a ball at midfield, raced down the right side line and deposited the ball into the left side of the net for her third tally on the year, resulting in the 1-0 final.
Throughout the match, Worcester State out shot Fitchburg State 24-6, while also holding a narrow 4-3 margin in corner kicks. In goal, Steele posted 11 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Witkowski stopped three shots for the Lancers en-route to her fifth win of the year.
Fitchburg State (2-8-0. 0-3-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday at it hosts the Lynx of Lesley University at 7 p.m. Worcester State (5-3-2, 2-0-1 MASCAC) will host Keene State College on Wednesday for a contest starting at 7 p.m.
