Steele turns away 14 shots for the Falcons in non-conference setback

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.  – Sophomore forward Emily Becher tallied two goals as the Eastern Connecticut State women's soccer team defeated Fitchburg State University, 3-0 in non-conference women's soccer action at the Mansfield Athletic Complex this evening.

In the first half, Eastern Connecticut State opened the scoring midway through the frame as sophomore back Maggie Bodington received a pass from junior Hailey Lehning and fired a shot into the right side of the net for her fourth tally on the season for the 1-0 lead.

The Warriors continued the offensive pressure, putting nine shots on target, but Falcon keeper Morgan Steele was stellar in net, finishing with eight first half saves to keep the score at 1-0 going into the intermission.

Following the break, the hosts doubled their margin (2-0) at the 46:02 mark when Becher settled a corner kick off the foot off Bodington and deposited the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading 12th marker on the year.

Eastern Connecticut State upped its advantage in the 53rd minute of play as Becher and Bodington connected again off a set play. Bodington crossed a ball over to Becher, who headed the ball inside the near post for her second goal of the contest for the 3-0 lead.

Throughout the game, the Warriors controlled the offensive end, holding a 31-2 advantage in shots, while finishing with an 12-0 margin in corner kicks.
