Fitchburg State Rallies Past Becker, 2-1 (2OT)

Peralta's first collegiate tally lifts Falcons to non-conference victory

LEICESTER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team was in action this evening, defeating the Hawks of Becker College, 2-1 in double overtime at Alumni Field behind freshman midfielder Britny Peralta's first collegiate goal just two minutes into the second overtime

In the first half, Becker opened the scoring just eight minutes into the contest as freshman forward Adrianna Lake collected a feed from sophomore Lindsey Keith a deposited the ball into the back of the net for her third tally on the season for the 1-0 lead.

Fitchburg State knotted the score at the 15:26 mark when senior midfielder Ali Sheehan slid a pass over to junior Whitney Mansfield, who fired a shot inside the far post for her first score of the 2016 campaign to make the score 1-1 going into the break.

Following the intermission, Becker threatened with just over ten minutes remaining in the second half as junior Meghan Bealka and Keith put back-to-back shots on target, but Falcon keeper Alexandra Foster was able to deny both shots to preserve the 1-1 stalemate.

The Falcons best scoring opportunity of the half came minutes later when senior Nicole Hallett rifled a shot that rang of the post, while newcomer Gabriella Foster put a shot towards goal that went just wide to send the game into overtime.

Following a scoreless first overtime, Fitchburg State broke the 1-1 deadlock at the 102:12 mark as Peralta launched a shot past the outstretched arms of Hawks netminder Jordyn Martel off an assisted from Mansfield, resulting in the 2-1 double overtime final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State finished with a 19-9 margin in shots, while also holding a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, Foster made four saves for the Falcons in 102:12 minutes of action, while Martel turned aside seven shots for Becker in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Friday as it hosts the Engineers of WPI at 7 p.m. Becker (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NECC) will visit Fisher on Thursday for a contest starting at 6 p.m.
