Hemmings registers five saves for Falcons in non-conference setback 

Worcester, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team suffered a tough 3-0 setback to the Engineers of WPI in non-conference action at Alumni Field this afternoon.

How It Happened

WPI took the lead just four minutes in the opening frame as freshman Leah Beauton (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) collected a feed of the foot of sophomore Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame) and fired a shot into the upper right corner for her second tally of the season before newcomer Lauren Kaija (Reading, Vt./Woodstock Union) doubled the Engineers lead (2-0) as she struck for her first collegiate marker off an assist from senior Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School).

In the second half, the hosts upped its advantage in the 82nd minute of play when senior Mari Bailey (N. Providence, R.I./Bay View Academy) gathered a pass from junior Megan Hanshaw and headed the ball into the back of the net for her first score of the season, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

WPI out-shot Fitchburg State 17-0, while also holding a 5-0 margin in corner kicks.

Freshman Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) registered four saves in net for the Falcons.

This evening's contest was the 22nd meeting between Fitchburg State and WPI on the pitch with the Falcons 5-17-0 against the Engineers.
