Falcons Clipped By Blazers, 3-2 (OT)

Marshall and Mitchell net one goal each in non-conference setback 

Chicopee, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team suffer a tough 3-2 setback in overtime to the Blazers of Elms College in non-conference action this evening at Leary Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State grabbed the lead at the 22:39 mark as freshman Elicia Marshall (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) redirected a shot off the foot of sophomore Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) inside the far post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the 1-0 margin.

Elms knotted the score (1-1) in the 37th minute of action when senior Danielle Asklar (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) fired a shot off the near post and into the net following a free kick for her first tally of the year.

In the second half, the Falcons regained the lead at the 59:01 mark as Mitchell gathered a feed from senior Hannah Keohan (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) and blast a shot of the framing and into the back of the net for her fourth score of the 2018 campaign to make the score 2-

The Blazers retied the contest (2-2) in the 70th minute of play when freshman Sydney Goodwin (Lawrence, Mass./Greater Lawrence Tech) connected on her first collegiate tally before Marshall nearly gave lead back to the Green and Gold, but her attempt rang of the post to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Elms secured the victory just 1:50 into the extra frame as Goodwin received a pass from senior Gigi Thibault (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) and deposited a shot into the upper left corner for her second goal of the contest, resulting in the 3-2 final.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest will mark the 11th meeting between the two teams on the pitch with the Falcons currently 7-4-0 all-time when taking on the Blazers.

Fitchburg State had won three of the previous four matchups with Elms registering a 6-1 victory in the last meeting on October 15, 2008 at Leary Field.

Elms finished with a 19-12 margin in shots, while also holding a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

In net, sophomore Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) made seven saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while junior Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) stopped four shots for the Blazers in the win.

Marshall registered a game-best seven shots for Fitchburg State in the contest.
