Hemmings stops five shots in non-conference setback 

Henniker, N.H. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Pilgrims of New England College this evening in non-conference action at the Don Melander Field.

How It Happened

New England College opening the scoring at the 22:51 mark of the first half as sophomore Bridgette Winters (Hillsboro, N.H./Hillsboro) gathered a feed from senior Emily LePage (West Greenwich, R.I./West Greenwich) and connected on her third tally of the season for the 1-0 margin going into the break.

Following the intermission, the Pilgrims doubled their margin (2-0) in the 60th minute of play when Winters collected a pass from senior Michaela Pomeroy (Thelford, Vt./Thelford Academy) and fired a shot into the back of the net for her second tally of the contest.

The hosts added an insurance marker at the 59:58 mark as sophomore Leeann Demirjian (Needham, Mass./Needham) netted her first goal on the year off an assist by Pomeroy to make the score 3-0 before sophomore Paxton Couture (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) capped the scoring for the hosts with her second tally on the season, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest will mark the ninth meeting between the two schools on the pitch with the Falcons currently 6-2-1 all-time when taking on the Pilgrims.

The two squads had split the last three matchups (1-1-1) with New England College coming away with a 1-0 victory in the last meeting on Sept. 30, 2014 at the Don Melander Field.

New England College held an 18-13 advantage in shots, while also finishing with an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

In goal, sophomore Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) turned aside five shots for the Falcons in the setback, while senior Kayla Pugliese (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) made seven saves for the Pilgrims in the victory.

Sophomore Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) concluded the contest with team-best three shots for Fitchburg State.

Falcons will host the Bears of Bridgewater State on Saturday for a MASCAC clash, starting at 10:00 AM. Pilgrims will host the Wildcats of Bay Path University for an NECC matchup with an 11:00 AM start.
