Falcons Defeated By Anchorwomen, 5-1

Medina nets lone goal in non-conference setback

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College this afternoon in non-conference action at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Rhode Island College opened the scoring at the 20:26 mark as Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) collected a feed from sophomore Brooke Young (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) and deposited a shot inside the near post for her team-leading 14th goal of the season.

The Anchorwomen doubled their margin roughly two minutes later when DeGrooth netted her second score of the contest off a feed by senior Leah Gravel (Johnston, R.I./Johnston) to make the score 2-0.

With the score 3-0, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit in the 36th minute of play as senior Maddie Medina (Pelham, N.H./Lowell Catholic) settled a loose ball in front of the net and fired a shot into the lower left corner for her first tally on the season to send the game into halftime at 3-1.

Following the intermission, the visitors extended its lead at the 47:33 mark when DeGrooth completed the hat trick, slipping a shot into the lower right corner for the 4-1 margin, resulting in the 5-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest will the seventh meeting between the two squads on the pitch with the Falcons currently 2-5-0 when taking on the Anchorwomen.

Rhode Island College has won the last three matchups with Fitchburg State, including a 5-2 decision in the last meeting on Oct. 26, 2016 at Elliot Field.

Rhode Island College held a 16-6 margin in shots, while also finishing with 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

In net, sophomore Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) made seven saves for the Falcons in the setback, while junior Erica Edwards (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) stopped three shots for the Anchorwomen to earn the victory.

With her four goals in the contest, DeGrooth set the Anchorwomen's all-time career goals mark with 41 career goals.
